Roland SPARROW, son of William SPARROW (c. 1859-c. 1904) and Caroline Helen DRANE (c. 1865-c. 1915), was born on 2 July 1894 in Stuston, Suffolk. On 4 July 1915 Roland was attested into the military at Croydon, aged 19y 6m, initially assigned to the Royal Field Artillery (Gunner) but later transferred to the Surrey Regiment. On 20 December 1917 he was on the War Office Weekly Casualty List No. 5447 Part 4, Ser. No. 23337, East Sussey Regiment, home place Lopham. In 1918 he was on the Absent Voters List for in South Lopham at Lang Fen Farm - similarly listed in 1919, so presumable still in the military at that time. He died on 28 February 1970 in South Lopham - b. 02.07.1894. He had his estate probated on 29 April 1970 in Ipswich, Suffolk - “SPARROW Roland William of Corner Farm South Lopham Diss Norfolk died 28 February 1970 Probate Ipswich 29 April. £2653”.
